Application deadline: Mon 12th December 2016, 5pm
Creative Nottingham North and Nottingham City Homes would like to appoint an artist to lead high quality creative community workshops and oversee the design, carving or embellishment of the new wooden road calming bollards at ‘The Rocks’ entrance to Broxtowe Country Park (Lindfield Rd/Alwyn Rd Entrance intersection).
The Design team comprises of representatives from Nottingham City Homes, HLP Architects, Nottingham City Council Highways, the Park Ranger and Creative Nottingham North Coordinator. We would like to appoint an experienced artist to lead on community engagement and encourage creative involvement from local residents and community groups during January and February 2017; with a view to Highways installing the finished wooden bollards when works start at the end of February 2017.
You will be expected to organise a series of creative workshops; including a creative opportunity on Saturday 14th January at The Hope Centre, St Marthas – when there will a chance to meet and involve local residents from the Broxtowe estate.
The shortlisted artist/s will be invited to meet the Design team on Tuesday 20th December. We anticipate working with an Artist/sculptor who has expertise and experience of working in wood and/or metal and leading community workshops to generate ideas, designs and meaningful community engagement in public art projects.
Having met the design team, the selected artist will be expected to work with community representatives to further their own understanding of the local community and the needs of the project and to develop creative approaches to engaging young and older residents, as well as users of the park, to feel some ownership of the project.
The artist will be expected to work closely with the Design team to ensure appropriate durable materials are used, designs are approved and the finished bollards are ready for installation. Care needs to be taken to ensure the designs are durable and vandal proof.
There are 22 wooden bollards within the plan; 1.2m high; 200mm x 200mm. They are a naturally durable hard wood. We are interested in a range of proposals, themes and approaches. Please tell us whether you would envisage using all 22 bollards, or every other one; have different designs for each bollard, a uniform approach or incorporate an interactive ‘find and discover’ element that engages people once they are installed.
Possible themes could include the area’s history and archaeology (an Iron Age settlement is beneath people’s feet in Broxtowe Estate); the social history of the area; connections to nature and the park.
To apply please provide the following:
- An outline of how you will approach engaging with community and key stakeholders in this project; who will you target to get involved, how many workshops would you hold?
- A proposed budget breakdown; including artist fee, marketing and materials.
- Please attach your CV, including images and a brief description of previous work.
- Please confirm that you have public liability insurance.
